Oaklandish

This classic Oaklandish logo starts with the official Oakland tree and then extends it to include the network below the ground; Oakland Roots.  Oakland is my home and where my roots are.

Though there is not perfect symmetry in this image, it is clearly a mathematical transformation.  At first glance, there are horizontal as well as vertical reflections.  However, the organic nature of the top does not actually contain symmetry and the bottom is in fact a rotation of the top.

This other image of the Oaklandish logo uses the same principle of rotation of the words.  However, in this version, the tree is a reflection of its opposite end, not a rotation as in the other image.  The one end is more degraded, representing either the roots or the branches, depending on which way it is rotated.

Dani's Post

In Santa Cruz, I hung out with the "skim board" crowd. Here is an image of my friend's skim company logo.

Mathematics:
- Look at the image like two diagonal "S"'s
- If you reflect the second "S" diagonally and then rotate it, it becomes the other "S"

Adam's math pattern images

this is an image of sidewalk tiles in barcelona. i lived in barcelona for many years and have always enjoyed looking at the patterns on the sidewalk. the most obvious math going on here are the rotations of the individual tiles, although there are also translations, and perhaps the groups of 3 rotates tiles also rotate to other sets of three.

this is a picture of a table that his been decorated with bottle caps. i chose it because i like beer, although not miller light. the caps rotate around the center, and together they make an image that reflects across.

Sarah

I like music. I like this pattern because I see a lot of individual rotations, translations, and reflections among the notes. Ex. a note can be a double reflection. I also see a collection of notes translating as the pattern repeats. Go music! Woo!

Zoo York Skateboard - Kate and Candice

This skateboard is neat because it has words all over the place. Although it's a simple design idea, the board uses the brand name to create a camoflauged look. I can see "Zoo York" translated and rotated in all directions. There are also a variety of colors and sizes that make it look really cool.

Star of David - Candice & Kate

As a part of the Jewish community, this image is a representation of the star of david that represents Judaism, translated to different parts of the mosaic. The diamond shapes that make up each point are rotated along the center point of the star, and you can also look at the diamonds as being reflected across the center of the star. Do you see any others?
